Reporting Relationship:
The counsellor directly reports to the Director of Student Services, and indirectly reports to the Primary Years Principal for the assigned division. The counsellor interfaces with teachers, counselling team members, students, student support teams, parents and community providers.
Description:
The comprehensive school counselling program consists of structured developmental experiences presented systematically through individual planning, responsive services, classroom curriculum, and systems support. The purpose of the counselling curriculum is to provide students with opportunities to develop skills associated with outcomes based on CASEL competencies (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making) and ISCA (International School Counseling Association) Standards.
Responsibilities:
Responsive Services
· Provides Individual and/or Small Group Counselling as determined by the School Counsellor and Student Support Team
· Maintains effective and transparent referral system in place for students, teachers/staff, and parents
· Provides consultation with parents, principal, teachers, and community agencies
Individual Planning
· Collaborates with students, teachers/staff, parents and external providers to provide for the holistic needs of the student
· Advocates for individual students by ensuring that stakeholders are informed
· Maintains confidential anecdotal notes, data and other documentation for students
Curriculum
· Creates classroom lessons targeting ISCA student outcomes
· Maintains ongoing curriculum review and learning activities to ensure student outcomes
· Uses data to inform curriculum development
· Uses teaching and learning strategies
· Provides small psycho-educational groups based on the Needs Assessment
· Involves the entire school community to implement an effective comprehensive school counseling program and embed social emotional learning throughout the school
· Provides social emotional resources, training and education to assigned division and the whole school as needed
Systems Support and Administrative Responsibilities
· Advocates for the school counselling program through communication with staff and parents
· Maintains time on task analysis and adjusts program priorities according to recommendations by ISCA
· Serves as a key member of the child protection committee and process/training
· Seeks out and participates in professional development activities
· Fulfills fair-share responsibilities as a member of the wider ISNS staff
· Adheres to the code of ethics of the school and the ISCA ethical standards
· Collaborates with the Student Support Team
· Remains actively informed and participates in policy review related to school counselling and broader student services
· Supports implementation of policy related to school counselling and broader student services.
· Displays competency in managing time and adheres to timetables and other schedules.
· Maintains positive collegial relationships as leaders in their field
